Itinerary

Day 1 :
San José

Welcome to Costa Rica!

Upon arrival at San José Airport, our driver will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel in the city. Upon arrival at the hotel a representative will be waiting for you, during this meeting we will explain you the details of your trip as well as expert tips.

  • Arrival transfer will be scheduled according to your arrival flight.
  • Transfer from Juan Santamaria International Airport [SJO] to Hotel Presidente

The small river port of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí (not to be confused with Puerto Viejo on the Atlantic coast!) is located about 1 ½ hours’ drive from San José on the Rio Sarapiquí. The hot and humid lowlands are used for agriculture, but there are also very well-preserved rainforests in the buffer zone on the edge of the Braulio Carrillo National Park. The area around Puerto Viejo and La Virgen is very suitable for birdwatching. The climate in this region is warm and humid tropical, with daytime temperatures varying from 19-31 degrees. The average rainfall is 4000 mm. Although rain can be expected throughout the year, the months with the heaviest rainfall are July, November and December.

  • Transfer from Hotel Presidente to Sarapiquis Rainforest Lodge

Today begins with a sweet surprise: the chocolate tour starts at 10:00 am at the suspension bridge to the Tirimbina Reserve over the Sarapiquí River and then leads to a former cocoa tree plantation. During the tour, the natural and cultural history of cocoa is explained. Afterwards, you can observe the processing process and the creation of chocolate at close quarters and, of course, have a taste of the delicious, organic “rainforest chocolate”.

  • Tour Guide (engl.-spanisch)

Afterwards, continue north to Boca Tapada. The rainforest lodge is located in the far north of the country, close to the border with Nicaragua.
Enjoy the evening on the covered terrace with a cool drink, accompanied by a concert by the jungle dwellers.

  • Transfer from Sarapiquis Rainforest Lodge to Maquenque Eco Lodge

Free day to explore the wonders of the area or enjoy an optional excursion.

Day 6 :
La Fortuna

Via “Muelle” you will then reach the village of La Fortuna, situated at the foot of the Arenal volcano, around midday. In good weather, the almost perfect cone can be seen from afar.

  • Transfer from Maquenque Eco Lodge to Arenal Paraiso Resort Spa & Thermal Mineral Hotsprings

Day 7 :
La Fortuna

Mini Combo #1 (Volcano + Waterfall + Lunch)

Today you will enjoy one of the most popular combinations in the Arenal volcano area, where you will make the most of the time of your visit, starting with the fascinating hike on the trails at the foot of the Arenal volcano (walk on the old lava flows of the 1968 eruption and its history) and primary forest with natural trails where you can see abundant vegetation, huge trees and the possibility of seeing local fauna that inhabits the private reserve. This tour is rounded off with a visit to the La Fortuna waterfall, where you can take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of the La Fortuna River. The tour ends with a delicious lunch in La Fortuna.

You will be picked up and taken back to the hotel.

Day 8 :
La Fortuna

Celeste River Hike

Today, a hike to one of Costa Rica’s most popular natural wonders is on the agenda: the Río Celeste in Tenorio National Park is named after its bright sky-blue color, which has various shades of turquoise in the play of light and shadow. Together with an English-speaking local guide, you will first walk through dense rainforest to the highlight of the hike: the picturesque 12-metre-high waterfall that gushes into the celeste-colored lagoon (swimming not permitted). Don’t miss out on taking a souvenir photo in front of this magical backdrop! Afterwards, go back and visit the “dyer’s place”, where two rivers with completely different chemical properties react with each other and finally give the Río Celeste its characteristic color.
On the way, you will pass a viewpoint and walk over a small, adventurous wooden bridge to the dyeing site. You then hike back the same way. Lunch is served during this tour.

Please note:
– Day tour, return around 16:00
– Difficulty level: 5/10 (many tree trunks and roots along the way)
– Hike from 5 years

You will be picked up and brought back to the hotel.

Breakfast, Lunch

Your journey today takes you to the cool cloud forest region of Monteverde. Thanks to the altitude of this destination, 1550m above sea level, an interesting variety of species, typical of high-altitude tropical forests, thrives here.

You will have the feeling of being on top of the world, but in reality you have arrived in the center of the country’s continental divide. In Monteverde, the sun-drenched faces of beach dwellers are replaced by the warm smiles of farmers, artists, naturalists and nature lovers, especially in the small but cozy town of Santa Elena.

  • Transfer from Arenal Paraiso Resort Spa & Thermal Mineral Hotsprings to Monteverde Country Lodge.

Day 10 :
Santa Elena

Package No 1 Selvatura

Today you will discover the cloud forest from a bird’s eye view!
Selvatura Park Canopy: Are you ready for a bit of adrenaline? Immerse yourself in the cloud forest of Monteverde as you fly from treetop to treetop. For the brave among you: swing through the cloud forest like Tarzan would!
Selvatura Hanging Bridges: Walk independently over 8 hanging bridges and catch impressive views of the mystical cloud forest of Monteverde with its giant trees. As you explore the various paths, have your binoculars or camera ready, with a bit of luck you may spot the colorful kingbird “Resplendent Quetzal”

You will be picked up and brought back to the hotel.

Hiking to Las Pailas and Oropendula Waterfall Tour

Your hike today to the La Oropendola waterfall and Las Pailas trails.
The Las Pailas sector is a spectacular display of the power of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, the most active and largest volcano in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Fumaroles, geysers, bubbling mud pots and many other attractions offer you an experience that you won’t find at any other volcano in Costa Rica.

Hike with our bilingual nature guide on the 3.5 km Las Pailas loop trail through the tropical dry forest and enjoy the best views of the volcano, volcanic activity, incredible nature and wildlife sightings. You can see more than 300 species of birds and many other animals, such as armadillos, coatis, iguanas, white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys and spider monkeys.

At the end of the hike, you can take a refreshing dip in the La Oropendola waterfall. From the entrance to the national park, a short walk along a path with varied terrain leads to the river. La Oropendola waterfall plunges an impressive 25 meters into a bubbling turquoise pool in the lush gorge of the Blanco River, creating an incredible tropical oasis.

The meeting point for the tour is the Hacienda Guachipelin. National park entrance fee must be paid in cash on site (approx. 17.-$ per person).

  • Local guide (Spanish-language)

Today we head to the popular Manuel Antonio National Park on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast.

This is located seven kilometers south of the town of Quepos, directly on fine sandy, bright and palm-covered Pacific beaches and offers very good opportunities for wildlife watching.

  • Transfer from Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin to Hotel Costa Verde

Halfway through, you stop at a beautiful, hidden bay and enjoy a refreshing snack. You can also snorkel here on Bisanz beach. Underwater visibility depends on the season and weather conditions. You are very likely to see parrotfish, starfish, angelfish and maybe even a sea turtle if you are lucky! This challenging tour offers you the opportunity to discover the wonderful nature both from “above” and “below”: you will see everything from pelicans to fly-fishing! Upon return, enjoy a meal. Transportation back to the hotel. Kayaks for one and two people. Children must be at least 8 years old to paddle alone.
