Day 1 :
San José

Welcome to Costa Rica!

Upon arrival at San José Airport, our driver will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel in the city. Upon arrival at the hotel a representative will be waiting for you, during this meeting we will explain you the details of your trip as well as expert tips.

  • Arrival transfer will be scheduled according to your arrival flight.
  • Transfer from Juan Santamaria International Airport [SJO] to Hotel Presidente

You start your Costa Rica adventure with a trip to the “little Amazon of Costa Rica”.

Early morning pick-up from your city hotel. Drive through the Braulio Carillo National Park to the Atlantic coast. On the way, stop for a hearty breakfast in Guapiles. Then drive through extensive banana plantations to the boat landing stage. There you change to a motorboat, which takes you across the main canal through the Tortuguero region to a rustic but comfortable lodge situated on a spit of land between the canal and the sea.

If you wish, you can visit the picturesque Caribbean village of Tortuguero with the local guide after lunch and then return to the lodge.

The rest of the day is at leisure.

  • Transfer by bus and boat: San José – Guápiles – La Pavona – Lodge Tortuguero

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today you will visit the world-famous Tortuguero National Park by boat, one of the most important habitats of the green sea turtle, the leatherback turtle and the hawksbill turtle. Here you can admire tropical nature at its best: Caimans, crocodiles, poison dart frogs, monkeys and manatees are just a few examples of the overwhelming wildlife in Tortuguero. You will then explore the area around the lodge with a guide.

In the afternoon, you will go on a boat tour through the jungle canals of Tortuguero National Park.
After dinner, there is the option of a guided night hike to the beach to watch the sea turtles lay their eggs (season: July to September/October).

  • Boat tour through the natural canals of Tortuguero National Park
  • Rainforest hike on the lodge trails
  • Entrance fee Tortuguero National Park

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, you return to the small river port by boat at around 9 am the next morning. After a drive through extensive banana plantations, you stop for a typical local lunch on the way. Pick up your rental car there and make your own way to Puerto Viejo.

  • Transfer by boat and bus: Tortuguero – Guápiles
  • Car rental pick-up around 1 pm at the restaurant in Guápiles

Breakfast, Lunch

Free days on the Caribbean coast! Long walks on wild beaches, impressive panoramic views of the Caribbean coast in the Manzanillo nature reserve followed by a swim at the tranquil Punta Uva beach, snorkeling or diving, sloth hunting in the Cahuita National Park or sporting activities such as mountain biking or kayaking.

Afterwards, treat yourself to a delicious fruit shake and try the traditional “Rice & Beans”, which is prepared with coconut milk.

Day 6 :
La Fortuna

You continue the round trip after breakfast and drive back along the Atlantic lowlands to Guápiles. Via “Muelle” you will then reach the village of La Fortuna, situated at the foot of the Arenal volcano, around midday. In good weather, the almost perfect cone can be seen from afar.

  • Self-drive from Namuwoki Lodge to Montana de Fuego Resort & Spa

Day 7 :
La Fortuna

Entrance Fee

Today you can visit El Mirador 1968, which is located right next to the Arenal National Park. You have 2 options to explore and enjoy the volcano and the natural surroundings.

For example:
‘Sendero El Bosque 1968’. The hike through the predominantly secondary forest takes about 2 hours. During this hike you can observe various animals such as monkeys, toucans and oropendolas. The hike is classified as moderate to advanced. There is also the hiking trail ‘Colada 1968’. This is 1 km long and easily accessible. You can enjoy fantastic views of the volcano or the lake. Among other things, you can cross part of the old lava, a testimony to the historic eruption of 1968.

Customers can reach Mirador 1968 on their own.

Today you will head north to the Rincón de la Vieja National Park.

Rincon de la Vieja is a place where the volcanic component with its fumaroles, lagoons and Pailas de Barro is combined with a great variety of ecosystems and impressive landscapes, waterfalls, regenerating grasslands and primary forests.

  • Self-drive from Montana de Fuego Resort & Spa to Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin

Breakfast, Lunch

After breakfast, you begin your hikes in the national park: the route takes about 2 hours, alternating between wet forest, crossing several mountain streams and dry, hot savannahs with little vegetation, until you finally reach the “La Cangreja” waterfall, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural pools filled with clear turquoise blue water. Afterwards, you hike on to the main attractions of the national park in the Las Pailas sector: bubbling mud holes, geysers and stinking fumaroles (steaming fissures) give you an impressive insight into the natural forces of a volcano.

Please note: The Rincón de la Vieja National Park is closed on Mondays!

The tour starts at the Hacienda Guachipelin.

Day 10 :
Santa Elena

Your journey today takes you to the cool cloud forest region of Monteverde. Thanks to the altitude of this destination, 1550m above sea level, an interesting variety of species, typical of high-altitude tropical forests, thrives here.

You will have the feeling of being on top of the world, but in reality you have arrived in the center of the country’s continental divide. In Monteverde, the sun-drenched faces of beach dwellers are replaced by the warm smiles of farmers, artists, naturalists and nature lovers, especially in the small but cozy town of Santa Elena.

Nocturnal Walk

Night hike in the Bosque Eterno de los Niños:

The Bosque Eterno de los Niños (Children’s Eternal Rainforest) is the largest private reserve in Costa Rica with an area of 20,000 hectares of protected rainforest in the north-east of the country. The reserve is bordered by the Arenal National Park, the higher part of Monteverde, Miramar and the Alberto Manuel Brenes Reserve in San Ramón. You enjoy a hike between day and night, which gives you the opportunity to compare the different activities of the forest in daylight and after sunset. The tour is accompanied by an experienced local guide and starts at 5:30 pm with the last sunlight of the day and ends around 7:30 pm in complete darkness.

Clients reach Bosque Eterno de los Niños on their own.

  • Local guide

Day 11 :
Santa Elena

Today you will visit the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. Situated high on the slopes of the Cordillera de Tilarán (1,500 m), the Santa Elena Reserve covers an area of 310 hectares. The efforts made to protect the region focus on the creation of forest corridors, which also protect the fauna of the area: the quetzal, pumas, jaguars, ocelots and red macaques, which need a large territory to forage and raise offspring.

Customers reach Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve on their own.

  • Admission
