The small river port of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí (not to be confused with Puerto Viejo on the Atlantic coast!) is located about 1 ½ hours’ drive from San José on the Rio Sarapiquí. The hot and humid lowlands are used for agriculture, but there are also very well-preserved rainforests in the buffer zone on the edge of the Braulio Carrillo National Park. The area around Puerto Viejo and La Virgen is very suitable for birdwatching. The climate in this region is warm and humid tropical, with daytime temperatures varying from 19-31 degrees. The average rainfall is 4000 mm. Although rain can be expected throughout the year, the months with the heaviest rainfall are July, November and December.

Today begins with a sweet surprise: the chocolate tour starts at 10:00 am at the suspension bridge to the Tirimbina Reserve over the Sarapiquí River and then leads to a former cocoa tree plantation. During the tour, the natural and cultural history of cocoa is explained. Afterwards, you can observe the processing process and the creation of chocolate at close quarters and, of course, have a taste of the delicious, organic “rainforest chocolate”.

This tour is rounded off with a visit to the La Fortuna waterfall, where you can take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of the La Fortuna River. Celeste River Hike
Today, a hike to one of Costa Rica’s most popular natural wonders is on the agenda: the Río Celeste in Tenorio National Park is named after its bright sky-blue color, which has various shades of turquoise in the play of light and shadow. Together with an English-speaking local guide, you will first walk through dense rainforest to the highlight of the hike: the picturesque 12-metre-high waterfall that gushes into the celeste-colored lagoon (swimming not permitted). Don’t miss out on taking a souvenir photo in front of this magical backdrop! Afterwards, go back and visit the “dyer’s place”, where two rivers with completely different chemical properties react with each other and finally give the Río Celeste its characteristic color.
On the way, you will pass a viewpoint and walk over a small, adventurous wooden bridge to the dyeing site. You then hike back the same way. Lunch is served during this tour.
Please note:
– Day tour, return around 16:00
– Difficulty level: 5/10 (many tree trunks and roots along the way)
– Hike from 5 years
